0215 There Is no such thing as perfect faith (Matthew 14:22-33)

The most important thing for believers is faith. Without faith, it is impossible to please God. Only faith pleases God (Hebrews 11:6). However, there is small faith and great faith. The Lord rebuked little faith. When we do not act in faith but remain in doubt, He admonishes us, saying, 'You of little faith, why did you doubt?' Therefore, we must not only have faith but also grow the size of our faith. However, our faith is never complete. Some think that an attitude of 'I believe unconditionally' is faith. But this kind of faith risks losing discernment and falling into blind faith. On the other hand, faith that requires examining everything and understanding before believing is not proper faith either. Faith must have two wheels—intellect and spirituality—moving together. Proper faith for us is faith that overcomes doubt through action in life and seeks understanding. Furthermore, faith cannot stagnate by thinking 'this is good enough.' Faith is a dynamic process that must grow at every moment."

1. Does Hexagonal Faith Exist or Not?

Today's passage occurs after Jesus performed the miracle of the five loaves and two fish, and to avoid the people who wanted to force Him to become king, He sent His disciples ahead across the sea. However, the disciples in the boat encountered difficulty when large waves arose due to an unexpected change in atmospheric conditions. Jesus came to the disciples walking on the water in the deep of night during the fourth watch (between 3-6 AM). When the disciples were startled and cried out in fear, thinking He was a ghost, Jesus reassured them, saying, "Take courage! It is I. Don't be afraid." Peter, overwhelmed with emotion, asked the Lord, "Command me to come to You on the water." He walked on the water temporarily, but seeing the wind, he became afraid and began to sink. The Lord reached out His hand and caught him, and they got into the boat together. As soon as the Lord got into the boat, the fierce wind completely stopped. The disciples who witnessed and experienced this amazing scene with their own eyes bowed down to Jesus. The only times the disciples bowed to Jesus were when they met the resurrected Jesus and in this passage. They bowed while acknowledging and confessing, "Truly You are the Son of God."

When we evaluate people, we consider various aspects: appearance, personality, occupation, family background, abilities, etc. When someone excels evenly in multiple areas, we call them a "hexagonal person." In that case, could there be hexagonal faith in religion and belief? It would be a balanced faith, both internal and external, that is well-developed in all areas without falling behind in any aspect. However, in reality, it is difficult to achieve hexagonal faith. Some areas may be balanced while others are not. Today, when the disciples saw Jesus coming on the water and were amazed at His power, they confessed, "Truly You are the Son of God," but Jesus had already revealed Himself in various ways before this. The disciples had already experienced Jesus healing the sick, casting out demons, and performing the miracle of feeding 5,000 people with two fish and five loaves. Although they had sufficient reason to believe He was the Son of God, it appears they only now acknowledged and realized this upon seeing Him walk on water and calm the wind. This shows they hadn't already acknowledged and understood, but continued to harbor doubt and hesitation. One of the important aspects of faith is consistency. If you are firm yesterday but shaken today, there is no consistency. Inconsistency is not balance. In the disciples' behavior, we see their inadequacy—still having continuous doubts and needing greater assurance. Hexagonal faith is still difficult to achieve.

2. See Your Own Inadequacy

Some people have faith that is evenly balanced in all areas. However, no one has faith that is close to completion. There is no faith that remains in a completed state; there is only the process of being continuously refined and matured through circumstances and the ups and downs of life. Peter was the disciple with the strongest faith among the disciples. How strong must his faith have been for him, a fisherman who knew the nature of the sea well, to have the courage to walk on water? However, before the Lord, Peter came to see his own inadequacy. When he actually saw the wind on the water, he doubted, became afraid, and began to sink. When the Lord, facing the cross, said "You will all abandon me and flee," Peter said, "Even if everyone else abandons You, I will never betray You," but he ended up denying the Lord three times. He thoroughly saw his still inadequate self.

Becoming a person of strong faith does not mean having the arrogance of thinking "I've made it now." Rather, it means becoming a person who knows their own inadequacy even more. Seeing one's inadequacy in faith is the beginning of humility, where one honestly acknowledges their limitations, abandons pride, and comes to depend completely on God. By revealing weakness honestly without covering it up, one recovers true confidence and growth in faith within God. We must be refined.

Therefore, faith exists between "already" and "not yet." We can rest in the security of "already," but we need the process of being refined and matured in the situations and processes of "not yet." Even when we love someone, we already love them but also want to confirm it again. When a wife suddenly asks, "Do you love me?" a husband may be flustered. Questioning is not because of boubt and disbelief. This is because the heart of love brings happiness through reaffirming, expressing, and receiving expression. Just like a relationship of love, faith should not be stagnant but should be active—practiced daily through action and experienced in life.

3. Grace Discovered in Incompleteness

The disciples followed the Lord and experienced many miracles and graces. Their experiences of faith and belief continued to accumulate. However, there were still people who had doubts. Matthew 28:17 says, "When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted." While they believed everything else, there were disciples who still hesitated in doubt because they simply could not accept the event of resurrection. Nevertheless, the Lord gave these inadequate disciples the "Great Commission" to make disciples of all nations. A mission is not given only when everything is complete; rather, He entrusts us with a calling even in our inadequacy.

Faith has no completed form. However, we can discover grace in incompleteness. It allows us to continue depending on the Lord. I am grateful that because we are inadequate, we can be more humble. We can be thankful that we have a faith that grows and develops rather than remaining in satisfaction. I pray that the faith of our believers will not remain stagnant in one place but will grow daily. Therefore, let us become those who fulfill the precious mission entrusted to us and receive blessings and grace.
